Excellence in Fluoroscopy

A Fluoroscopy scan utilizes advanced technology to capture accurate, high-resolution imaging of bones, muscles, joints, and solid organs. Utilizing C-Arm imaging equipment, an x-ray beam is transmitted through the body part that is being examined, and graphically illustrates location, movement, and functionality of internal bodily structures. Fluoroscopic imaging provides the equivalent of real-time videography in an x-ray format.

Fluoroscopy is used for diagnostic assessments, and it is frequently used for image-guided interventional procedures and therapeutic injections due to its precision.

Preparing for an Fluoroscopy Scan

Prior to scheduling a fluoroscopy procedure, a patient’s medical history will be reviewed to assess:

  • Imaging history is reviewed to identify cumulative exposure to radiation from previous x-ray scans and to denote any recent barium x-ray procedures that could pose interference with the fluoroscopy scan.
  • Anyone with a confirmed or suspected pregnancy should receive clearance from their referring doctor prior to scheduling a fluoroscopy exam as radiation exposure during pregnancy may lead to birth defects.
  • Patients need to share any known allergies or sensitivities to medications, contrast dyes, latex, or iodine.
  • Specific instructions will be provided to patients about food and drink restrictions based on the type of exam that is scheduled.

Does a Fluoroscopy Scan Use Radiation?

Fluoroscopy scans utilize varying amounts of radiation based upon the medically appropriate level needed to administer an assessment or procedure. The clinical benefits of the diagnostic accuracy of fluoroscopy outweigh the risk of the radiation dosage received during the scan.

What Happens During a Fluoroscopy Scan?

  • Patients are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled scan to allow time to register and prepare for the scan.
  • A certified radiology technologist leads the patient back to the imaging suite and will provide detailed information and guidance about what the patient will experience before, during and after the fluoroscopy procedure.
  • Patients will be asked to remove any jewelry or clothing that may interfere with the imaging procedure and will have the opportunity to change into a gown or scrubs.
  • The patient will be gently positioned on the x-ray table. Patients may be asked to move during the procedure and/or hold their breath for intervals of time while the fluoroscopy procedure is being performed.
  • Depending upon the type of procedure being performed, an intravenous (IV) line may be initiated that will be used to administer contrast dye. Contrast dye is used to provide greater clarity of the internal structure that is being assessed.
  • A c-shaped x-ray machine provides horizontal, vertical and swiveling functionality around the exam table that allows the radiologist to capture varying angles that optimally illustrate the patient’s internal structures.
  • For arthrography which involves imaging of a joint, fluid from the joint may be aspirated (withdrawn with a needle) prior to injection of contrast. Patients may be asked to move the joint to distribute the contrast throughout the joint.
  • Fluoroscopy imaging itself is not painful. Depending upon the type of procedure, the radiology staff will undertake measures, including local anesthesia if needed, to minimize any discomfort.
  • The length of time for a fluoroscopy procedure varies broadly. Staff will provide an estimated duration for the scan when the appointment is scheduled.
  • The radiology technologist will provide detailed guidance regarding post care instructions following the examination or procedure.

Results

A board-certified radiologist will read the images and provide a written diagnostic assessment of their findings for the referring physician within 24-48 hours of the fluoroscopy scan. A copy of the radiologist’s report will also be made available to patients via the patient portal. The referring physician will review the results with the patient and will discuss the next steps for care.
